While Joe Biden holds a lead over Donald Trump in the prediction polls, several swing states are still too close to call.

This election is likely to go down in history as one of the most unconventional US presidential races ever held due to the uncertainty the coronavirus pandemic has caused.

It is also unclear what election day itself will look like, given the risk of catching the virus by voting in person, and the fact that several businesses in major cities have boarded up their shops in anticipation of public unrest.

To win the presidency, Mr Trump or Mr Biden must get more than 50 per cent of the electoral college vote. There are 538 possible electoral votes, which means 270 are required to win.

The date on which a new president is sworn in is enshrined in the US constitution. Either Mr Trump or Mr Biden will be inaugurated on January 20, 2021.
