Say what you want about Raul Sanllehi, but the Spaniard did do some good at Arsenal.
The Gunners axed the former Barcelona chief as their Head of Football this past summer because some of his transfers look a little suspect.
William Saliba still hasn’t played for Arsenal despite joining for £27 million 18 months ago, while Nicolas Pepe, the club’s record signing for £72 million during the same window, looks a thousand miles from fulfilling his potential in North London.
But Sanllehi did do some cracking business with regards to outgoings – and fans of the North London club might be reminded of that tonight.
Arsenal sold Alex Iwobi to tonight’s opponents Everton in the summer of 2019 and truthfully, the Nigeria international hasn’t looked like a £34 million signing one bit.
The 24-year-old has scored just one Premier League goal in 37 Premier League appearances for the Toffees – and none for 16 months – which, for a winger, really isn’t a good return.
In addition to that, Iwobi, who graduated from the North London club’s academy, only has two assists from the same number of top-flight appearances.
He’s a good player, hence why he has started played 12 of the Goodison Park side’s 13 league games this season under Carlo Ancelotti, but he isn’t a £34 million player.
Sanllehi gets a bit of a bad rep from Arsenal fans, but there’s no denying that he absolutely pulled Everton’s pants down for Iwobi and although reasons to praise the Spaniard are few and far between, that’s one of them.
